Leatherlips will host the 2010 Day Sailer North American Championship Regatta (NACR) July 7-10. The national competition brings together top U.S. amateur sailors of the one-design class. Junior sailors (under age 18) will kick off the event on Wednesday, July 7.
Local Day Sailer Fleet #98 (The Zebra Mussels) – based at Leatherlips Yacht Club – is hosting the event in conjunction with the Alum Creek Sailing Association. Racing will be held daily at Alum Creek Reservoir
“We expect between 25 and 30 boats will compete,” said NACR Chairman Scott Graham. “This is the U.S. Open of Daysailing.” While the field is open to registered DSA members, the competition brings out the best sailors in the class nationwide.
Graham said sailors from as far away as the west coast will travel to the Buckeye state for the event. “We expect to host sailors from California, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Maryland and Massachusetts, as well as Virginia, Florida and Michigan.”
The Day Sailer (correct spelling) is one of seven one-design racing fleets that call LYC home. Leatherlips Yacht Club is located on the Scioto River across from the Columbus Zoo. Leatherlips, which is currently accepting new members, recently celebrated its 80th anniversary.
