Laser Fleet 513

The Laser is a single-handed racing dinghy. The biggest attraction of the Laser dinghy is that is protected by the One Design class rules, which means that no changes are allowed to the boat unless they are specifically permitted in the rules. So in theory all Laser boats are the same whether they are brand new or 10 years old, making it the sailor that wins the race, not the boat. The Laser is a challenging boat that rewards athleticism, subtle steering and trimming techniques, as well as tactical excellence. It is a singlehanded Olympic class boat, also sailed at club, national and international levels. With nearly 200,000 boats in 140 countries, it is clearly the world’s most popular adult and youth racing sailboat. One of the reasons the Laser is so popular  the boat’s sheer simplicity. The two-part free-standing mast and sleeved sail make the boat easy to rig and its lightweight hull make it easy to carry and cartop. (Text from International Laser Class Association)

Laserlips Inland Classic 2011

We’ve got a regatta coming up Saturday, June 25, and I’ve just noticed that I’ve not put out a Notice of Race (that I know of), so here goes. We are keeping it casual. The extended forecast is for sunny and warm but you know anything goes by then (except maybe snow). Please let me know if you are coming, so I know how many and what sort of prizes to get.

Laserlips Inland Classic

RRS in effect, but practice sails allowed.

Separate starts for Radial and Standard.

Skippers meeting at 11:30, first race at noon, no race begun after 4 p.m. No throw outs.

We will have prizes, not trophies.

Please bring your own drinks and an appetizer to share after racing. Hope to see you then!

Oh yeah, also, there is a $10 fee for the regatta.

Laserlips Inland Classic, 2010

We had a fairly steady north wind around 10 mph for the Laserlips 2010. RC set an Olympic course—a triangle, then windward/leeward, then another triangle. We had 5 relatively short course races with 3 minute starts. The first 3 races were close to 30 minutes each; the last 2 were sailed on a smaller course due to impending heavy rain. Mike Gaber had 3 outstanding races, but then had to retire from the regatta due to another obligation. Dick Harmon and I were neck and neck in the last 3 races, with Dick pulling ahead in each. Out-of-towner Jeff Smith took 4th, saying we had very interesting wind! Sarah Giesman, her son Grayton, and Doug Reys rounded out the roster. Sailors chose from a variety of prizes—sailing gloves, chocolate, or beer, with winner Dick Harmon choosing first. Thanks to race committee John Lawmon, Rick Wohleber, and Rosalie Kinney for creating and setting outstanding courses.

Laser Inland Classic 2009 Regatta

We had three out-of-towners, for a total of a dozen registered boats. The first two races were breezy and shifty from the south, with occasional white caps. It settled a bit after lunch with wind from the west. We enjoyed pizza and beer afterward. Thanks to John Rupert, Christie Whitt, Mike Clowes, and Tami Chapman for RC duties. Thanks to Mark Hess for beautiful trophies, John Myers for room set up, Sarah Giesman for food prep, and Bob France for registration. Kudos to Victor Sergent for spirit. He kept sailing despite numerous capsizes. The same for newish sailor John Myers, who returned to racing after draining a bunch of water from inside his boat hull.
