Sea Scouts

Sea Scouting is a program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women with an interest in boating. Its purpose is to bring a character building, citizenship training and fitness program to the youth of America. Sea Scout Ship 280 is sponsored by Leatherlips Yacht Club and focuses on sailing specifically. Members of the Ship learn boat and water safety as well as camping and other social activities. Sea Scouts also participate in council and national Sea Scout and Venturing events including a bi-annual yacht race.

Seven Admitted to Sea Scouts

On Sunday, October 9, 2011, Leatherlips Yacht Club hosted a Sea Scout Admissions Ceremony to welcome new scouts to Ship 280. Scouts, their families and Adult Scouts gathered together to welcome new members to the Ship. Also joining Ship 280 as guests were Christie Whitt, LYC Commodore, Jim Thomas, LYC Rear Commodore and Kevin Flanagan, LYC Treasurer.

The evening ceremony began with the Color Guard raising the flags, followed by the “Pledge of Allegiance” and the “Sea Scout Promise” led by Dan Mejak. After an invocation by Committee Chair Ron Lime and a welcome to LYC by Christie Whitt, Ship 280 welcomed our new youth members. Admitted to Ship 280 were Chris Johnson as Boatswain, Ian Kahkonen as Boatswain Assistant Administrator, Dylan Wildman as Boatswain Program Assistant, and Alexis Dilorenzo as Yeoman. Also admitted were new adult advisors. Jack Boyles and Linda Johnson were admitted as Mates. Chuck Johnson was admitted as a Committee Member.

Fall foliage, and calm waters and warm temperatures provided the perfect backdrop to the entire membership standing in formation and proudly showing the Sea Scout uniform. Following the ceremony, all gathered in the club to enjoy an endless bounty of desserts.
