MOhio-Thistle Thistle Fleet 21

Thistle-Day_2009-11-01 007The Thistle is a high performance one design racing sailboat  that is generally sailed with a three person crew. The Thistle Class Association is recognized as one of the largest and best one-design classes in the country with multiple family generations sailing together on the same boat. Designed by Sandy Douglas, the Thistle debuted in 1945. The sail plan consists of a main, jib, and symmetrical spinnaker. The boat planes easily in 10-12 knots of breeze yet will also glide effortlessly in light air. The class firmly believes in the one-design principals thus keeping all boats competitive.

This is a great honor and shows that our hard work is paying dividends.  A great thanks goes out to all who have helped make this fleet something special.  Let’s continue to introduce new people to the Thistle and help each other get better on the water!

The perpetual trophy is currently at the club on display above the fireplace.

Improving Club Participation Article

Borrowed from Scuttlebutt News:

Dallas Johnson

Dallas Johnson - No Saving Needed
(October 19, 2010) Dallas Johnson submitted a letter in the September issue of Sailing World magazine, where he commented that while everyone is talking these days about “Saving Sailing”, there are still sailing areas - such as his home waters of Lake Minnetonka - that are doing just fine.
As current Commodore of Wayzata Yacht Club, Dallas provides some insight into what’s going right at his “inland lake fly-over world” in the U.S. state of Minnesota.

Thistle Fleet 21 News

Paul Kreitler

Following a consistent performance on a beautiful afternoon of sailing, team Bartz regained the top spot on the leader board!

Five Thistles were out for a beautiful afternoon of sailing. Fall was in the air with an air temperature of 60 F and a brisk wind out of the north/northeast. The wind speed and direction were variable at times, which made setting a course challenging for the Daysailor race committee. On several occasions, the shifts in direction and pressure left a few sailors (including the author) drifting while the competition sailed away.

Annette and Dick sailed very consistently in the shifting winds to first and second place finishes. France (5-1), Harmon (2-4), and Kreitler (3-3) tied for 2nd through 4th place for the day. And Eric Krause rounded out the fleet with 4th and 5th place finishes. All day the fleet shuffled positions off the starting line and around the bouys. So each team lead the pack at some point in the day. Team Bartz showed us all, however, that it is possible to be consistent even at a place like Leatherlips.

Series Score Update

Competition remains extremely tight for the top three positions in the fleet with Bartz in first place at %, Holzaepfel in second at %, and France in third at %. Be sure to be out for the final Thistle Day on October 31st to witness three excellent teams battling for the season trophy. Full season scores are:

1 - Bartz (87.7%) 5 - Tschantz (79.8%)
2 - Holzaepfel (87.6%) 6 - Kreitler (78.4%)
3 - France (87.2%) 7 - Rodgers (71.5%)
4 - Harmon (81.6%)

Thistle Fleet 21 News

Paul Kreitler

2010 is here and the 2009 sailing season is only a memory. But before those fond memories are too stale in our minds, I want to take a glimpse in the rearview mirror.

2009 was our second season with the Thistle Day format and the first season we scored the Days as a series. The Thistle Day Series 2009 consisted of 8 days of sailing with 18 races. We had 11 fleet members compete with 9 guests joining us on various days. Of those 11 competing fleet members, 6 qualified for the series by participating in at least half the sailing days. Three participants, Holzaepfel, Bartz, and Kreitler were on the water for 7 of the 8 days. Dick Harmon and Evan Rodgers were out for 6 out of 8. Bob France rounded out the group of qualifiers with 5 days. Hess, Savage, Isern, and Krause were out there for 3 days, which was just one day short of qualifying.

Thistle Fleet 21 News

There were six boats on the starting line Sunday for a beautiful afternoon of sailing. On Sunday morning, it looked like we were going to have 8 boats, but Dick Harmon and I lost our crews because of various illnesses and the Hesses couldn’t make it. So, we dropped to 6 boats, which was still respectable.

On the starting line, we had Team Savage with Rick at the helm with his son Mike, Team France with Bob at the helm and John Myers as crew, Team Bartz with Dick and Annette, Team Lido with Steve Moore as skipper, John Lawmon in middle, and Kathy Muenz in front, Team Holzaepfel with Kit at the helm, daughter Laura in front, and Noel Thurber in middle, and Team Kreitler with yours truly at the helm and Dick Harmon learning how cramped the front of a Thistle can be.

Thistle Spring Coaching/Tuning Session

Paul Kreitler

Saturday, April 11th, Skip Dieball of Quantum Sails Toledo came to Leatherlips YC to run a coaching/tuning seminar for the Thistles.  Approximately 30-sailors converged on the club house around 10 AM for an excellent presentation on Thistle sailing while enjoying hot coffee and bagels from Panera Bread.  For an hour and forty-five minutes, Skip covered a wide range of topics ranging from boat set up to sailing the Thistle flat and fast.  He spent a lot of time discussing the dynamic bending of the Thistle (and other boats) mast and how this dynamic bend influences sail design.  He talked about how important mast set up is on land, but how you can’t really tell if a mast is set up correctly until you’re on the water.  He showed a number of photographs of Thistles with either too much dynamic bend or too little to demonstrate how the mast set up effects the sail shape on the water.  Skip also mentioned that it is very difficult to see the nuances of the sail shape from inside the boat and that pictures from outside are the best analysis tool.
