Sea Scout Ship 280

What is Sea Scouting?

Sea Scouting is a program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women with an interest in boating or sailing. Its purpose is to bring a character building, citizenship training and fitness program to the youth of America. Sea Scout Ship 280 is sponsored by Leatherlips Yacht Club and specializes in sailing. Additionally the members of the Ship learn about power boating, boat and water safety as well as going camping and holding other social activities. Sea Scouts also can participate in council and national Sea Scout and Venturing events including a bi-annual yacht race.

Who Can Join?

Young men and women that have completed the 8th grade and are not yet 21 years old can join Sea Scouts. New members do NOT need to know how to sail nor be existing members at Leatherlips. The Ship is very active with the education program at Leatherlips Yacht Club. In fact, learning to sail is an integral part of the Sea Scout advancement program. In the summer, the Ship meets weekly at the Leatherlips Yacht Club in the clubhouse and holds 1 or 2 ‘on the water’ activities each month. During the sailing season meeting are held on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 PM (Starting April 27th). In the winter meetings and other activities are held such as ski trips.
